Having to deal with a room of disrespectful students is no fun, especially if you are a substitute teacher who deeply cares about student achievement, the following information is for you. Many times, when students walk into the room and see you sitting there instead of their regular teacher, they get an attitude.

“Oh no, we got a sub, why can’t Miss Albright be here. I hate subs.”

A substitute teacher certainly doesn’t want to hear such discouraging words. We want to be liked and respected as well as the regular teacher.

We do not want to hear kids say, “Oh no, a substitute teacher or “Oh wow, this is going to be a free day for us.”

Back in the day a substitute was more welcomed in a classroom than he or she is today. Children understood that learning was more important than always having he regular teacher there. This is not to say that students didn’t miss an absent teacher. But they were more respectful of the authority there to teach them.

Reasons Students Don’t Appreciate Substitute Teachers

Today substitute teachers are disrespected by some students immediately. There are several reasons:

Just Fill Ins:

Students see substitute teachers as someone only there to fill in for the teachers. They don’t see subs as someone with the knowledge, skills, and talents that can help education them and provide uninterrupted learning.

Push Overs:

Have you ever felt like the children were overtaking the classroom? Many students see subs as pushovers, someone who will allow them to get away with breaking classroom rules without the appropriate response.  For instance, students used to come up to me and say, “You are the best substitute teacher in the world.”

Normally, this is alright. Any teacher wants to hear that type of language coming from children. However, there was a problem with such compliments. They were coming from students who were the most disruptive in the classroom.  When you hear these types of compliments from students with toxic behavior. Beware! You just may be perceived as a push over.

Power Struggle

Many students view the substitute teacher experience as an opportunity to gain the upper hand in the classroom. Such kids love the idea of struggling for power. They challenge the substitute in every area until it becomes a distraction to the classroom and the ability to teach and learn.

Impact of Lack of Appreciation

Thousands of substitutes quit subbing. Although they may like kids, they decide that it is not worth their sanity. Some of the classroom they sign up for challenge the very core of their emotional stability, and sometimes safety and security.

In addition, when substitute educators are not appreciated in the classroom, they stop coming. And regular teachers find it difficult to take off to go to important appointments. Districts across the nation are suffering from a substitute teacher crisis. Something must change.

Without substitute teacher’s burnout among regular teachers will increase. Because they cannot get a break, they will experience overwhelm in their lesson planning as well as classroom management capacity.

Substitute teachers provide uninterrupted learning for students and staff. For example, when teachers are missing without a reserve. Regular staff are disturbed. Many times, they must split classroom, ending up with an increase in students and challenging behavior. This interrupts the daily plans designed for the regular class.

What Needs to Change

The best way to promote appreciation and awareness for substitute teachers is to educate children about their importance. Children need to know that reserve teachers can guide learning as well as a regular teacher.

In addition, principals need to gather students in an assembly and let students know that without substitute teachers, regular staff will not be able to function probably or provide a continuous quality education.

Substitutes keep things going smoothly throughout the school year.

Moreover, whole classrooms should be award incentives, by administration, for showing reserve teachers a wonderful school day.

Things can change once students are aware that substitute teachers are as important to the education process as regular teachers. Teachers, districts, and administrators will be happy when their staff has access to an abundance of reserve teachers ready to step in and continue to educate and promote the next generation of leaders.

Effective classroom management is a cornerstone of successful teaching, and mastering classroom transitions is crucial for maintaining a positive learning environment and maximizing instructional time. In this blog post, we explore ten strategies that teachers can use to ensure smooth transitions between activities, thereby keeping students engaged and learning continuously.

1. Plan Transitions in Advance

Detailed planning of each transition during the school day can significantly minimize downtime. Knowing exactly what needs to happen next allows teachers to efficiently guide students through the process, ensuring that no instructional time is lost.

2. Establish Clear Routines and Expectations

Having clearly defined routines for specific transitions, such as moving from desk work to a group activity, helps students know what is expected of them. This clarity reduces confusion and misbehavior, facilitating a smoother transition.

3. Use Visual and Auditory Signals

Employing signals like lights, bells, music, or hand signals can effectively indicate the start and end of transitions. Consistency with these cues helps students quickly understand their roles and actions during transition times.

4. Practice Transitions

Transitions, like any classroom procedure, need to be practiced. Regular drills help students become familiar with expected behaviors and reduce the time it takes to switch between activities.

5. Implement Timing Strategies

Using a timer or stopwatch to limit the duration of transitions can turn them into a game where students strive to “beat the clock.” This approach makes transitions more engaging and reduces dawdling.

6. Prepare Materials in Advance

To reduce downtime, have all necessary materials ready for the next activity before the transition begins. This preparation might involve distributing worksheets or setting up equipment beforehand.

7. Use Transition Activities

Engaging students in brief activities or tasks immediately after a transition can maintain their focus and prevent disruptive behavior. These activities could be a quick review question or a short writing prompt.

8. Assign Roles or Responsibilities

Giving students specific roles during transitions (such as line leader, door holder, or material distributor) promotes responsibility and helps streamline the process.

9. Provide Positive Reinforcement

Recognizing and rewarding classes or individuals who transition smoothly and quickly fosters a positive atmosphere. Positive reinforcement motivates students to adhere to transition expectations.

10. Reflect and Adjust

Regular reflection on the effectiveness of transition strategies is essential. If a particular transition consistently takes too long or causes disruptions, it may be time to adjust the approach or try something new.

Mastering classroom transitions is not just about saving time; it’s about creating an environment where continuous learning is possible. By implementing these strategies, teachers can ensure that their classroom runs more efficiently and that every minute is used effectively to support student learning.

During their teaching careers, every educator should be aware of their part in promoting national development. Educators must realize that what is taught in the classroom will indirectly impact the development of our country for generations to come.

One aspect of national development is economic development, which means the capability to provide high wage jobs for citizens. Low wage jobs, which take little or no knowledge and skill to perform, will never take a nation to the status of power, leadership, and high-quality living.

According to BYJU’S, other aspects of effective National Development include:

  • Eradication of Poverty
  • Development or Rural Areas
  • Increasing Agricultural outputs
  • Handling of Growth in Urban Areas
  • Enlargement of Economic Knowledge

The advantages of national development are powerful. Great nations such as the United States, Russia and China have mastered the practice of national advancement. Citizens are equipped to find high paying careers and enjoy a high quality of living.

Programs for eliminating poverty are constantly launched and introduced into society. With the desire to be helped and a dedication to work hard, any person can raise his or her standard of living.

For great nations, the idea of national development is always a priority. Staying competitive and discovering better ways of living is the key to maintaining greatness.

The role of education in national development cannot be denied. Educators provide students with the knowledge, skills, and intellectual abilities to become valuable to the progressiveness of society. With a quality education students can make wise decisions, take responsibility for their lives, and become leaders in their communities and states.

Educators must continue to focus on the core subjects (STEAM) in which every student should obtain excellence. STEAM subjects include:

  • Science
  • Technology
  • English
  • Art
  • Math

Out of the five core subjects, the most important of them is the topic of English or Language. A thorough understanding of English is the beginning of success. Students must not how to read and write as well as study and do research. None of these activities are possible without the ability to read the English Language.

The understanding of science and technology require students to be able to comprehend what they read in the textbook. Without a degree of mastery of the English and reading a textbook is non other than a foreign language.

Nevertheless, when students are equipped in the knowledge of STEAM, they are ready to move on to higher education or even start a career if they so desire. They are ready to play their part in national development.

Empowerment: Teachers and Students

Both students and teachers should feel empowered. For educators, the awareness that you are playing a significant part in the success of the nation’s future, should provoke an excitement within each day they step into a classroom.

You are empowered to help guide them into a quality of life that is full of honor and integrity.

For students, the recognition that they are being prepared to take on responsibility and the leadership of a nation directly or indirectly should be a high-level honor.

The misconception that teachers don’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things is a mistake that governments would regret if teachers stopped teaching. The teacher is one of the chief cornerstones of national development in every nation.

We can see this in poor nations without an education system. Ignorance and poverty run rampant and keep the people worried about everyday survival instead of future progressiveness. Education will always be the solution the society that grows in leaps and bounds.

Success in National Development and Education go hand and hand.

The importance of Creativity in the classroom cannot be overstated. If you ignore your creative side in lesson planning as well as in other areas of your daily classroom practices, you might not be in favor of getting up and going to work in the mornings. Your students will most likely be bored with teaching due to uninteresting presentations, and some of your students might even become constantly disruptive.

However, when teachers unleash their creative side, they make their classroom a place where students desire to be and where students want to participate.

A Teacher Who Refused to be Creative

I friend of mine who taught fourth grade didn’t believe in creativity. He concentrated on presenting an image of sternness to send a message to potentially disruptive students.

But that strategy backfired when 90% of his class went into a rebellion mode. Students constantly refused to do work or listen to his mechanical lesson presentations. Certain students even complained to the principal about the boredom generated due to his noncreative teaching strategies.

creative side

Eventually, instead of answering the principal’s call to unleash his creative side, he gave up the job in the middle of the semester to another teacher.

Unleashing Creativity without Reservation

As teachers, if our most passionate desire is to transform the lives of our students, we must be willing to unleash our creative side without reservation. Education is not about us. It is for the betterment of our students via the knowledge and vision we instill within them.

The benefits we receive from unleashing our creative side in the classroom includes

  • Heightened fun and excitement
  • Greater interest and participation
  • Accelerated Learning and Growth

John Gardner’s enormously popular book Multiple Intelligence taught me how to use creativity to meet the various needs of students. In his book, he discusses 7 bits of intelligence designed to accommodate the various learning styles of students. For example, some students learn better from listening to lesson plans integrated with music while other learn more effectively from lesson plans presented with lots of visuals.

The 7 Multiple Intelligences include:

  • Visual-Spatial
  • Bodily-kinesthetic
  • Musical
  • Interpersonal
  • Intrapersonal
  • Linguistic
  • Logical -Mathematical

You can learn the meaning of each concept by getting a copy of John Gardner’s book and reading it. But these creative teaching strategies will go a long way in helping make your lesson planning interesting as well as keeping your students engaged.

If you have traditionally taught your students via the same old boring, mechanical strategies year after year with unpleasant results, then it is time to commit to creativity and change. Dedicate yourself to unleashing your creative side.

Getting Started

The first thing we want to do is use our imaginative thinking to come up with innovative ideas or improve existing practices. To do this, we must look at what we are doing well and then look at the areas in which we need to improve.

The aim is to become a teacher who presents interesting, exciting and engaging lesson content as well as an educator who promotes creativity among students.

3 Strategies for generating creative Ideas

Brainstorming

It is one of the oldest methods for discovering innovative ideas. Sit down and write as quickly as possible whatever comes to your mind. There is no need to judge or condemn what you have written. Just write nonstop on how to improve on the areas in which you need to be more creative.

If you do this exactly the way it should be done, you will be amazed at some the creative ideas which you come up with. Most of the time, creativity doesn’t come off the top of your head, they must be earned via deep thinking.

Story Telling

Figure out ways in which you can incorporate stories in your lesson presentations. Students, as well as adults, love to hear goes stories. Stories break up the constant bombardment of concepts and information that may be contributing to student’s restlessness and boredom.

Sometimes, when students are tired and restless, I don’t go straight into the next lesson, I take out a book, call students to the carpet and read them a delightful story.

Better yet, if you can come up with an origin story related to the content in which you are teaching, you are hitting the ball out of the park and making a home run as far as bringing students to focus on an idea which will allow them to remember it forever.

Creativity Board

Last, get the students involve in unleashing their creative side. Introduce them to story boarding. Story boarding is he practice of getting everyone to come up with creative ideas and share them on a gigantic board in the classroom. You’ll be amazed by the ideas that some of your students generate, some of which may have never crossed your mind.

In participating in story boarding, students get to see how their ideas contribute to the betterment of their classroom, resulting in more appreciation for education, learning, and creativity.

Demonstrating your creative side will go a long way in re-exciting your student’s interest in education and perhaps making your classroom a model for the entire school.

Teachers who are not passionate and dedicated to students’ academic achievement may soon find themselves increasingly stressed out. Teachers who deliberately and constantly allow students to control and disrupt the instructional aspect of the classroom while they hesitate to apply the appropriate degree of discipline shouldn’t consider exiting the teaching profession.

A teacher’s primary responsibility is to take charge and manage the classroom and display a great degree of instructional leadership and gain the respect of her students. A teacher who refuses to do this is apparently not a good choice for students who want to achieve and parents who want the best for their children.

Chaos

Without proper instructional leadership in a classroom, confusion and chaos will most likely be the norm for the entire school year. Teachers who just place books in front of students and expect them to do UN-discussed textbook assignments cannot possibly care about the education of their students. In order for a student to learn effectively, a teacher must provide direction and meaning regarding the subject. Otherwise, mental chaos and confusion will manifest. Teachers who refuse to lead their students are abusing the possibilities of the next generation.

Parental Trust

Teachers must take charge of the educational situation in their classroom in order to maintain the parental trust. The public (including parents and community) expect teachers to equip their children with a quality education. Teachers who are indifferent and don’t adequately prepare lesson plans for students don’t really care about what others think of them. Many do just enough to get by and receive another paycheck. Some give up on challenging students long before the semester ends.

Knowledgeable

The most significant reason a teacher must take charge of the classroom is that she is the only one knowledgeable enough (not the students) to meet the educational requirements and standards set forth by the school board. Knowledgeable teachers are able to research and interpret new trends in education and translate this knowledge to her students. However, to go this far, a teacher must be dedicated to the progress of her students. Bad teachers do not have this commitment.

Growing Insubordination

When students get a sense that teachers are unwilling to provide instructional direction in the classroom, insubordination will be the result. Many will simply stop listening to such a teacher. The Students will not respect a teacher who refuses to respect their need for a quality education. Lazy teachers will soon find themselves out of a job soon. Students, as well as parents, will most likely protest a teacher’s lack of competence who doesn’t deliver a quality education to her students.

The Bottom Line

Students and parents must be aware of such teachers. A good idea for parents is to visit the classroom often to observe the strategies and tactics used by the teacher. Weak strategies involve little or no engagement with the students. Student and teacher engagement must be a high priority for effective learning to take place.

Passionate, knowledgeable, motivational and organized teachers thrive in the educational field because they understand the critical responsibility of instilling in the next generation a sense of excellence. These are the teachers that parents and student should pursue.
